Letrozole is a drug for treating breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It works basically by lowering the levels of estrogen which in turn slows the growth rate of breast tumors. The drug is commonly prescribed to patients who have been using tamoxifen for more than 5 years. It may be prescribed to treat other conditions not mentioned in this guide.  


How to Use
Before you start using Letrozole, it is imperative that you speak with your doctor first. He or she should know if any of the following conditions apply to you:

  • Liver disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Osteoporosis, osteopenia
  • If you use tamoxifen

Use the medication exactly as directed. You may be required to take the dose once every day or once every other day. Don’t take a dose that is smaller or larger than prescribed. You also need to take the drug for the full prescribed period. 

Letrozole can be taken with or without food. You will also need to submit to regular blood tests to help your doctor know how the medication is reacting with your body. The bone mineral density may also need to be checked on a regular basis.

In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip it if it is almost time for the next dose. Never take a larger dose to compensate.

Letrozole can harm an unborn baby. Don’t use the medicine when pregnant. You should also not use the drug until you have gone through menopause. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor before you start using the medication. It is unclear if the active ingredients can pass into breast milk and whether they can harm a nursing baby. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.
