Clomid (Clomiphene) is a fertility agent prescribed to stimulate ovulation in women who want to become pregnant. It works by stimulating the release of hormones that are necessary for ovulation. The drug may also be prescribed for other purposes not discussed in this guide.
How to Use
Before you start using this medication, it is important that you contact your doctor first. This is because this medication cannot be used by everyone. You may not be eligible for the treatment if:
- You are already pregnant
- Have uterine fibroids
- Have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Experience thyroid problems or any other endocrine disorder
- Have liver disease
- Have endometrial carcinoma or endometriosis
- Have serious or chronic illnesses
If any of the above conditions apply to you, you may not be able to use Clomid (Clomiphene). In other times, the doctor will have to vary your dose or require special monitoring during treatment.
Clomid (Clomiphene) should be used exactly as prescribed. The dose needs to be taken with plenty of water. The drug needs to be taken in a cycle of 5 days.
FDA Pregnancy Classification
Clomid (Clomiphene) should not be used by pregnant women. It may cause birth defects to the unborn baby. You should also not use the drug without first consulting your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
Store at room temperature and far from direct heat and moisture.
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome – OHSS (swelling of the hands and/or legs, shortness of breath, abdominal swelling or pain, nausea or vomiting and weight gain).
- Breast discomfort or tenderness
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Ovarian enlargement
- Blurred vision
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
Clomid (Clomiphene) can cause visual side effects such as blurred vision. Be careful when operating machinery or performing tasks that require undivided attention. Make sure that you contact your doctor if you have any visual side effects.
The use of Clomid might increase the chances of multiple births. This may put the mother and the fetuses at risk. During pregnancy, you need to work closely with your doctor.
OHSS can be fatal. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the symptoms of OHSS.
